Young Leaders from Archbishop of York Junior School hosted a community afternoon tea on Thursday 15th June.

The Year 6 pupils had explored ways they could serve others and ‘be the change they want to see’ in their local community but also in the national and global communities.  They decided to host an afternoon tea for their local community to enjoy but also use this opportunity to raise money for ‘Children in Distress’, a charity that works in Romania.

AYJS has had links with this charity for several years as it has worked to care for disabled and abandoned children in Romania.  The pupils learnt about ‘Children in Distress’ and got involved in their Christmas shoe box project earlier in the year to send shoe boxes of gifts out to Romania.  They wanted to support the charity further by raising money.

The pupils recognised that they could do something to give to their immediate community that would also benefit children in great need within the global community.

The pupils worked very hard to organise and run their afternoon tea.  They baked an impressive selection of cakes, took orders, served drinks and cakes and entertained their guests with music, singing and even a few jokes. They raised an amazing £575.55 for 'Children in Distress'!

Beatrice, Year 6, said;

"I really enjoyed the afternoon tea because we all worked as a team to serve people and help everyone.  I feel proud that we have raised so much because it will go to help so many people."

Fred, Year 6, said;

"We realised the potential of working together and what we could achieve with this event.  Everyone enjoyed doing it and they could see that it was successful.  It is a phenomenal amount that we have raised and the charity will be able to do so much with that."

Rozy Brian, Strategic Lead for Primary Awards, said;

“I was delighted to attend this afternoon tea and see first-hand the hard work, diligence and confidence these wonderful young leaders showed.  They were incredibly attentive hosts and great examples of ‘being the change they want to see’.”
